As of January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom requires that visitors acquire the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. This change affects travelers who wish to visit the UK for short stays, i.e., less than six months. Here’s what you need to know.
What Is the ETA?
The ETA is a digital travel permit that travelers must obtain before entering the United Kingdom. It is similar to systems used by other countries, like the United States' ESTA or Canada's eTA, designed to enhance security and streamline the entry process. The cost of an ETA is £10.
Who Needs an ETA?
Americans who plan to visit the UK for short-term stays, such as tourism, business, or family visits, are required to obtain an ETA. Citizens of every country except the UK and Ireland will also need an ETA.
How to Apply for an ETA
The application process is straightforward and can typically be completed online.
Visit the official UK government website.
Fill out the application form.
Pay the fee.
Receive confirmation email.
When to Apply
It is recommended to apply for an ETA well in advance of your travel date, at least a few months, if possible. While the processing time can vary, applying early ensures that any potential issues can be resolved before your trip.
Duration & Validity
An ETA typically allows for multiple entries into the UK over a specified period, often linked to the validity of the traveler's passport. Check the specific terms attached to your ETA to confirm the duration and validity.
Traveling Without an ETA
Travelers arriving in the UK without an ETA may be denied entry. Ensure that all travel documents, including the ETA, are in order prior to your departure to avoid disruptions.
Can Travel Agents Secure an ETA for Me?
While travel agents — like us! — can assist with document preparation and organization, we cannot apply for an ETA on behalf of our clients.
